May 03rd, 2008: GLAAD Media Awards Handed Out in LA Ceremony
News Update icon
The Show Will Air on Bravo on June 27

Sally Field, T.R. Knight, Rachel Griffiths, Matthew Rhys, Garry Marshall, Sarah Silverman, Jimmy Kimmel, Sofia Vergara and Zoe Saldana were among the dozens of celebrities who joined the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) as it honored Janet Jackson, Rufus Wainwright, and Herb Ritts, and presented awards for Outstanding Drama Series, Comedy Series, and Reality Program in Los Angeles on Saturday, April 26 at the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
At the ceremony, Ellen DeGeneres presented Janet Jackson with GLAAD’s Vanguard Award, honoring media professionals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the GLBT community.
“To everyone at GLAAD and everyone in this room, I would just to say that I hope I can always walk worthy of this award that I have both in my hand and my heart,” Jackson said in her acceptance speech.
Also at the event, Sharon Stone presented the Stephen F. Kolzak Award to Rufus Wainwright. The Stephen F. Kolzak Award is presented to an openly GLBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the GLBT community.
“I’d like to thank GLAAD so much for allowing the world to see us as we are — as human beings — and to fight for us when we are being defamed and maligned,” Wainwright said accepting his award. “And also to allow gay people, who think that everything’s fine, to actually realize that it’s not, and that there is a lot of work to do.”
GLAAD also honored Herb Ritts with a posthumous Pioneer Award, which is given to an individual, group, or media outlet that made a significant contribution to the development of GLBT-inclusive media images prior to the creation of the GLAAD Media Awards. Tom Ford presented the award, and Cindy Crawford accepted on behalf of the Herb Ritts Foundation.
“Herb Ritts clearly understood the power and importance of positive LGBT images in the media,” Crawford said while accepting the award. “He once said, ‘The more the public can see examples of people of the same sex together, the more the barriers will be broken.’ I know how much it would have meant to Herb to be here himself to receive this honor from GLAAD, in his hometown, basking in the love and respect of his community.”
Kathy Griffin opened the show by inviting her mother, Maggie Griffin, onstage to quiz her about her knowledge of the GLBT community. Later in the show, Grammy Award-winning singer Joss Stone performed two songs for the near-capacity crowd of 2800 in the Kodak Theatre.
The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community and the issues that affect their lives. Along with the Los Angeles presentations, awards were presented in New York on March 17, and in South Florida on April 12. The remaining awards will be presented in San Francisco on May 10 at the San Francisco Marriott.
Previously GLAAD announced an exclusive agreement with Bravo, its new broadcast partner, which will telecast the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. The national media advocacy organization has presented the GLAAD Media Awards annually since 1990, but this will be the first televised airing of the celebration on a fully-distributed national cable network. GLAAD will provide details about the upcoming broadcast date in the near future. //

May 03rd, 2008: Sharon Stone goes Greek at the GLAAD Awards
News Update icon
Maybe Madonna had a previous engagement, because presenting an award to Rufus Wainwright at last night's GLAAD awards was Sharon Stone in a heavy, pleated Grecian goddess gown that made her faboo figure look droopy and pudgy.

Stone's short frizzled hair, no doubt meant to be Helen of Troy-inspired, looked more like an ode to Medusa.

Maybe that's why Stone seemed a little peevish when Wainwright jokingly lifted the hem of her gown to check for panties (or the lack thereof).

Get it? "Basic Instinct?" The infamous leg-crossing scene?

Yeah, Sharon didn't think it was very funny or original either.

So what's your appraisal of Sharon's ancient Greek get-up? [Source]

May 03rd, 2008: Sharon Stone’s Super Red Face
News Update icon
Actress Sharon Stone was recently captured on film sporting a very red face. Online sources speculate that the 50-year old actress’s red, blotchy face is the result of excessive use of laser skin resurfacing techniques to minimize the appearance of wrinkles. Other sources said that the redness may have resulted from exposure to the sun.

However, Stone has said that she has no plans for plastic surgery and will grow old gracefully. In 2005, the actress sued plastic surgeon, Dr. Renato Calabria, who claimed to have given her a facelift. Stone withdrew the defamation lawsuit before it was taken to court but details of whether or not she received any form of compensation is not known. [Source]

April 28th, 2008: Basic Instinct 2 Review (Blu-ray)
News Update icon
Admit it, guys; secretly you’ve anxiously awaited the release of Basic Instinct 2 on Blu-ray even though you correctly suspect an appalling film. And you know why, so I won’t waste space presenting the obvious. What you don’t know is the journey into Sharon Stone’s undies isn’t the erogenous high-def adventure you seek.

It’s been 14 years since Catherine Tramell embarked on a maniacal sex-filled ice pick rampage through San Francisco’s aristocracy. During the unexplained time off she’s pumped up her bra size and relocated to London, England, in search of inspiration for new guaranteed best-seller novel. In other words, Sharon Stone felt the legal threat in her pocketbook and finally agreed to make this film long after its welcome ran dry with audiences.

Seeking the ultimate rush and delivering an appropriately campy return to Basic Instinct, Catherine speeds through the streets of London in a sweet Spyder sports car while a drugged up star football (soccer) player massages her privates. She then unintentionally – or intentionally – steers the car into the Thames River where the poor drugged sap drowns with a blank stoned smile on his face.

The car’s descent into the river’s bowels effectively kills any hope the fun ride continues. A sluggish pace takes over starting with Catherine’s court sentencing to psychiatric observation under the lazy eye of apparently horny Dr. Michael Glass. David Morrissey plays this Michael Douglas stand-in character with the charisma of a gnat impersonating Liam Neeson, while overly aggressive Catherine plays him and any other human she comes in contact with for her own creative devious pleasure. Especially susceptible to Catherine’s charm is detective Washburn, who many of you will recognize as professor Lupin from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. If the real British police force is manipulated as easy as this guy is, then I feel sorry for London’s citizens.

April 28th, 2008: Madonna will attend amFAR's AIDS gala at Cannes!
News Update icon
OMG, Madonna is coming to Cannes!

The musical superstar will join Sharon Stone and Harvey Weinstein at the annual amFAR Cinema Against AIDS fundraiser May 22, always the highlight of the international film festival's social scene.

The event will be sponsored by Bold Films, Chopard (the company that made the jewelry Madonna wears on the cover of her new album, "Hard Candy"), the Weinstein Company, Audi, Canal + and Hewlett Packard.

In addition to the star-studded formal dinner and auction at Moulin de Mougins, a special short clip of "I Am Because We Are," the documentary about Malawi's AIDS orphans produced and narrated by Madonna, will be screened for guests. Another full-length screening is also skedded for the night before, May 21, in Cannes.

No word on performers at the May 22 event. But I'd say Madonna is a distinct possibility! Past performers have included Sir Elton John, Natalie Cole, Ringo Starr, Macy Gray and Lionel Richie.

Tables for this year’s Cinema Against AIDS will range from $40,000 to $150,000. For event reservations and details, call (212) 219-0297 or visit www.amfar.org. [Source]
