Sharon Stone’s legs are staying crossed. The 49-year-old actress, who shot to fame as a sexually ravenous serial killer in Basic Instinct, tells Sun Media she almost quit acting because she was sick of playing vamps and vixens. “I was just like, ‘I don’t think I can do any more Catwoman movies,’ ” she says, referring to the notorious flop in which she swapped scratch marks with a whip-cracking Halle Berry. “I felt like I’d been kind of pigeonholed. I couldn’t really work as a character actress because my choices were so diminished. And so I worked with my agent and said, ‘I just want to work in independent films because I think I can get hired for character parts.’ “Every movie I worked on I had to play some sex-symbol part. I felt now that I’m approaching 50, how am I going to get to express myself if I don’t do this? So that’s finally really starting to turn around.”

Following the casual dress code of Sundance in freezing Park City, Utah, where temperatures have dropped to -10 Celsius, Stone’s glamorous make-up looked out of place with her slate denim jacket, black leggings and ankle boots. Stone joined her co-stars Jimmy Fallon, Tom Arnold and Illeana Douglas and director Patrick Sisam at the screening of their new comedy about a commitment-phobic man who reunites with his estranged father. During her time at Sundance, Stone will have to be on her guard from activists from animal rights charity PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), who have gathered outside screenings in a bid to shame fur-wearing celebrities. Stone’s love for fur has been well-documented and despite media pressure, the actress continues to wear her beloved animal pelts. The event is a casual reunion of the cast and crew of the film The Year of Getting to Know Us, before it premiered last night. In the crowd are actors Jimmy Fallon, Tom Arnold and Illeana Douglas, three of the stars of the comic-edged drama. The other stars, Lucy Liu and Sharon Stone, aren’t here yet.The film’s Canadian co-writer and director, Patrick Sisam, is also awaiting friends and family from Toronto, various parts of the United States and as far away as London and Dublin for his first feature film, and although he says he’s getting nervous, it doesn’t show.
